Back in 2007, brothers Andrew and Glenn Sansome launched the first Cans4Films Festival. It was then that the Cans4Films formula was established with Glenn’s DeVoteD DVD store acting as a collection point for donated cans of food. The concept was simple: when people brought in a can of food, they received a free weekly DVD rental. At the end of July, the collected cans were donated to a local hunger relief provider. Right off the bat, the event was a success with DeVoteD DVD raising over 1,000 cans of food for the Plenty Valley Salvation Army.
With the support of Network Video, 2008 saw the Cans4Films Festival become a national event, resulting in independent video stores right across Australia signing up to jump onboard this great cause. Thanks to the higher level of exposure, 2008’s Festival raised over 60,000 cans that were passed onto Foodbank and various local charities; this level of donation was matched again in 2009. Again, over 60,000 cans of food were raised and went to the Salvation Army. Last year, another 60,000 cans of food was raised and sent off to local charities all over Australia.
Now, in 2011, the Cans4Films Festival is gearing up for its biggest year ever. Once again, the focus is firmly on local Network Video stores assisting their local communities. With your support and much appreciated donations, we can band together to make a real impact on the lives of many struggling Australian households and families. Together, we can help those that need it most.
